Sid Sijbrandij discusses how he and co-founder Dmitriy Zaporozhets realized their vision to reimagine GitLab as a single application for the DevOps lifecycle.

Sid realized the demand for a single application that addressed the entire software development life cycle was high. As a result, he and Dimitry decided to build GitLab as a single application that helps developers plan, create, verify, package, release and configure applications at a faster rate than ever before. Today, GitLab is the only repository that allows developers to complete every stage of the development and operations lifecycle.

Sid’s career path is anything but traditional. He studied applied physics and management science in college. He started three companies before GitLab, including being the first full-time employee of a recreational submarine company. Sid was first introduced to GitLab while working as a self-taught Ruby programmer. Sid started a business around GitLab in 2012 with the author of GitLab, Dmitriy Zaporozhets. Leading GitLab through Y-Combinator’s winter 2015 batch, Sid has since grown GitLab to over 250 team members across 40 countries and closed $20 million in Series-C funding led by Google Ventures. A champion of the open source community, Sid is altering conventional wisdom on DevOps practices and open core business models.
